Benchmark 1. (Body Systems & Interactions)

In this benchmark lesson, students will review the body systems as well as their interactions with the other systems in the body. The lesson begins with a video from National Geographic about the human body to engage students and spur a conversation about new facts they learned from the video.  After sharing, the teacher and students will fill out the body systems chart with the organs, functions, and interactions of each of the body systems.  The chart content knowledge will be derived mainly from student work in Investigation 1, but the teacher can help provide more thorough knowledge as necessary.  As homework, the students will complete a body systems interactions worksheet where they are given a series of events that students then have to relate to interactions by stating which body systems are affected.  The worksheet will be reviewed the next day in class with a discussion in which students describe their reasoning behind their answers.

Objectives.

Students will be able to:
  • State the organs that are a part of each body system.
  • Relate body systems to their functions and interactions with other body systems
