Benchmark 3. (Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes)
In this benchmark lesson, students will discover the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure. The lesson begins with students watching a video of Bacteria fun facts to engage students in the subject matter. Once students share facts they found interesting from the video with their partners and class, the teacher then puts up a list of cell organelles. Each shoulder-partner pair is assigned one organelle to research from the textbook, finding information about its function, appearance, and which cell type it is normally found in. Once students complete their research, each pair will present their work to the class while students fill in a chart for each organelle. During presentations, the teacher will add on additional necessary information as well as correct any errors stated by students during the presentations. For homework the students will create a Venn-diagram comparing prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Students will be able to:
- Identify cell structures
- Describe cell organelle functions
- Identify which structures are in which cell types
- Compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
