Benchmark 2. (Immune System Defense)
In this benchmark lesson, students will learn about the immune system and the parts of it relating to defense against infection and disease. The day begins with a bell-ringer that has students write down how they think their bodies help them fight off illnesses. Then, during a two-day period, students will work in pairs to complete an activity that has students read about different Immune System components (T-cells, B-cells, macrophages, etc.) as if they were people applying for jobs. Through the reading and “application process”, the students learn about the different skills parts of the Immune System have and what sort of work they are used to doing. After the students complete the activity, students share in small groups and then with the teacher what they learned from the activity.
Students will be able to:
- Identify and list components of the Immune System necessary for defense
- Describe the functions of the main Immune System defense components
